Scene 3
Characters: Christina, Carla, Alex

Christina: (she's sitting at kitchen table w/girlfriend, Carla Looking at the classified ads in the paper)
Oh look here's one, Carla! A studio for $600, but that's not a very good neighborhood is it?

Carla
Not even a neighborhood, Christina!
It's storage sheds near the highway!
We'd be listening to the trucks all night.

Christina
Carla...I want to move out and get my own place so bad,
I'd live in a storage shed.

Carla
Well, with what you have to payout, up front, to get a place,
maybe we should get rent a shed.

Christina
What do you mean "up front"?
Even if rent is $800, Carla; that's only $400 for each of us.

Carla
There's so much to consider.
If you don't have good credit...or in your case...any credit...
You end up paying first and last month rent.
Then there's other things like...

Christina (worried that she'll never move out on her own)
Like what?

(they go back and forth with Carla naming costs, and Christina
getting more and more worried as she says "okay")

Security and cleaning deposits?
Okay.

Electricity and gas.
Okay.

Telephone bill.
Oh.

Carla
We have to eat. We have to play, girlfriend!!

Christina
Food.
Movies...
Omigod! I need to start working right now, before I finish school.
I need three jobs to save...

Carla
Whoa. School is going to be over so fast, Christina.
Then you can get a full time job
And we can get our own place together. It's going to work out.
Lots of people are doing it. It's gonna' be so cool.

Alex (comes in, notices Carla, comes over and plants himself . He is "in luv" with Carla)
Hey...you got room for your big brother in your new fine apartment?

Christina (she moves back over to computer )
When I move out Alex, I'm changing my name so you can't
find me.

Alex (addresses his sister, but is smiling...big time... at Carla)
How are you going to pay for an apartment?
You need a job.
Who's gonna give you a job??
The only job you're qualified for is "princess"...

Carla
Alex, if you're trying to impress me with your compassion,
I'm impressed.

Alex
Good, Carla. So, you'll go out with me?

Carla
In your dreams Alex!!

Alex
You ARE in my dreams, Carla. Now we got to work on getting you....

Christina
Alex! We are working on my future here!
Not...your pathetic fantasies.
Carla and I are checking the ads for apartments.
I'm working out my plan on the computer, so when school's over....

Alex/Mando
Is there a plan in there for you and me, Carla? Whaddya think?

Carla
Alex....how many languages do you understand?

Alex/Mando
Two..why?

Carla
That's too bad!
‘Cause I can say "Get Lost!".... in five.
And I'd be wasting three of them. Now get outta' here,
or I won't even bother insulting you again.

Alex (over dramatically...starts to back out of kitchen)
Oh...I'm a dying man here. You're breakin' my heart.

Carla & Christina.. ( standing together glaring at him)
.....Good bye, Alex!!!
(He backs out of kitchen, big smile, holding his hand over his heart,
silently mouthing the phrase "I love you" over and over to Carla)

Christina (starts getting all anxious and excited)
You know, he's right about work.
All I've ever done is babysit, and work in the church thrift shop.
I've never even filled out a job application.
How am I going to convince someone to hire me full time.
How will they know they can trust me? When could I ever prove to....

Carla
Whoa, girl! You need to finish up school before you get worked up.....

FADE out during Carla comforting Christina
